Hohner Golden Melody Review: Old vs New 🥊
How do i find this on my circle of fifths wheel?
Seydel , cleaner crisp sound imho .
The difference of price is pretty high. I’ll stick with MB1896
Background music is disturbing.
Tried lots of bending lessons ….sounded awful….first bending lesson with you spot on……thank you.
It's the '47 for me.
I like the tone of both MB and 1847. I also like the overall sound. There is that distinct rasp with a MB that isn’t there on an 1847, and the 1847 has a warmth to it that I just don’t get on a MB. So a lot depends on what you want to sound like. I use certain harmonicas for certain things, depending on what I’m playing. I was told how difficult it was to play them because of the reeds. So I got one because I figured if I could master them, it’d really improve my overall technique. I expected to take a bit of time to get the hang of them. But I was so surprised with how easy they were to play from holes 1 to 10. I find that Marine Bands are more forgiving. If your technique isn’t spot-on a MB will let you get away with it. But an 1847 won’t. In that respect, playing 1847s for a while has really helped me improve my technique. But it’s not hard. I also find that a Marine Band is easier to play fast runs on. It takes more precision in terms of air pressure to get the reeds vibrating on an 1847 which makes it harder to play fast. I can understand why John Popper doesn’t play them! If I want to play faster I go to a MB deluxe or my trusty old Lee Oskars. But in every other respect I prefer my 1847 Silvers. I do t have a full set yet because of the cost, but the ones I have are the nicest harps I’ve ever played. In addition, they are the most comfortable harps I’ve ever played too. They don’t catch my beard like a Lee Oskar does. And MB Deluxe, whilst sounding great are the most uncomfortable I’ve ever played. I’ve heard they’re better than the MB classic, and I don’t own a Crossover so can’t comment, but my Deluxe gives a horrible taste from the protruding bronze reed plate and the left and right back corners on the cover plate are sharper then they need to be, and I have cut my hand once. 1847s are very smooth, rounded with properly filed edges on the metal. The German Silver (basically nickel silver) reed plates on an 1847 Silver don’t taste bitter in my mouth. And I haven’t snagged my facial hair once! The over-blow thing could be an issue for some people, but I don’t really use overblows (I can, with a good run up, manage a hole 6, but not well enough to actually use in a tune!) so it’s not a problem for me The only real issue I’ve had with 1847s is that there’s always been one blow note (usually one of the lower ones) that chokes easily. A bit of gapping sorts it out, and the overall sound and playability makes it worth the time to do that (by comparison, I find the Kongsheng Baby Fats choke very easily. But I find the volume, tone and the ability to get good bends on those are so poor anyway that it’s just not worth that hassle of taking the cover plates off. I only use those for messing around and having fun, or if I want to achieve a particularly strong mute/way effect - which they excel at)
1847 or crossover?
Great videos Jonah. The No Bend Blues scale starts with a 3 Blow in the video (7:40) But on your Scale Cheat sheet the G No Bend Blues Scale starts on a 2 Draw. As they're both a G, is either ok?
Yes, they are both OK, same note so they are interchangeable
The comparison between the MB and 1847 was so clear with how you’ve recorded it! I was actually pondering which one I’d get next and this made the decision easy
Correct me if I’m wrong but stainless steel reeds are generally harder to bend than brass or even phosphor bronze reeds, right? Or is that really more to do with technique?
As I said in my video, it’s slightly different to play in general (bends included), but I wouldn’t say it’s significantly harder.
I’ve heard a lot of people say that. But when I got my first 1947 Silver 7 months ago I was surprised at how easy it was to bend. Not as easy as a MB or Lee Oskar, but not at all difficult. In addition, I find it far easier to hold a sustained bend for a longer period, the 1847 gives a really stable bend.
Great having you out Jonah 🦊 ! ❤
It was fun jamming, you put on a great show ✌️
Have a Seydel 1847 as well.. but never play it, cause it keeps on pulling hairs out of my mustache..😢 The Hohner Rocket is my favorite! 💪🏻
Those sandwich style harps kill your facial hair for sure
I’ve heard a lot of people say that. I have a big bushy moustache and a 4 inch long beard. My MB deluxe occasionally snags my facial hair. My Lee Oskars pull out hair quite a bit. My 1847 Silvers never, ever have. Plus, they are so well smoothed and rounded they are, along with the Session Steel, the most comfortable harp I’ve ever played. But I don’t count the Session Steel because I find them to be a nightmare to play!
😍🤙❤😍🤩
Waiting for a long time for this kind of review . Thank you so much . One question - I've one Seydel classic in Bb & want to buy another one in A , so is the silver model playability is same ? If not then I will definitely buy this one . Please share your thoughts.
Yeah, these all pretty much play the same, and comb is just down to personal preference. The silver would be my second choice in their lineup, just cause I don’t like the metal combs personally
John's, one great suggestion was/is to try different harmonics, I wanna try the flat harps. What key do you suggest? A flat, B flat, C flat or E, as in echo, flat... If I missed one you think is a better choice, please let us know. Thanks Bro, Slick
Johna... Sorry spell check beat me to the 'send' button. My apologies 😢
@@DavidVeitch-fg9sv Bb, because it lets you play in F
Session Steel may work for some people but i believe that Seydel which is arguably great harmonica maker did a poor piss job designing Session Steel from the point of view of ergonomics. They are about 2.5mm thicker than Hohner Rocket and covers meet the comb at a steep angle. The mouthpiece does not extend into your mouth - it is very flat. All that means that when you try to make air tight embouchure - which is effortless on Hohner harps it FAILS for many people with Session Steel. Your lips try to make airtight seal with a tall "wall" of steel and plastic. Which may work ok for some people. Online you see tons of posts from people complaining that their new Session Steel is leaky . Except it is not the harp but their embouchure. Brought by poor design by Seydel. Some people may eventually overcome it and some may not - i believe Seydel needs to acknowledge that and redesign that harp. I play SS Orchestra S and I use "U-blocking" - and use it mostly for Irish melody playing without bending - so it does not bother me a lot. But I would NOT buy them for blues - no way.
Excellent craftsmanship
Gorgeous harmonica .
I've always draw bent by choking the lower edge of the hole I want bent with either my tongue or lower lip, relearning this is gonna be fun!
I just got me some sydel blues steel sessions so far my favorite
As far as the suzuki I like the olive and blues master best because thee is no beard catchers corners
Lee Oscar's have the beard catcher I don't like otherwise spot on
You are fantastic thank you for all your help. We really love you.
Where can you find semi custom harps at this price point? Every custom I’ve seen has started around $200
-(4 -4' 4) or (-4 -4' -4) ?😮
Natural ability you can practice as much and how long you like and there is always going be some young punk to come and kick your ass.
There are a number of Easttop models, most with smoother edges and recessed plates.
What key is the harmonica?

Hey Jonah, When you were playing through the Boss Katana Mini at 3:07 were you playing through any pedals? If so what pedals and if not what setting on the amp?
Agreed!!! thanks very informative!!! You and Jason on stage!! way cool man!!
Thanks!
@@HarmonicaRevolution signed up for the latest class.. practicing!
Hey J. That was cool! Well done! Love this. 😊
Awesome ✌
You played with Jason...I'm impressed, Jonah!
Really nice playing at the end there! Very sweet use of the major pent scale. Loved the high notes - they really cut through the mix, and when played well can make the performance really exciting - like a guitar playing up at the "dusty end".
Thanks!
I love your stuff, but I am clueless on this one. My brain exploded - I’ve got a lot to learn before I can digest this one…
Just try the easy version of this that I mentioned. Playing first position using a backing track in the relative minor. So if you are on a C harmonica, you would play over an a minor backing track. Then just see what comes out, you'll probably hear the sound change because of the focus on minor, even if you're playing mostly the same notes.
@@HarmonicaRevolution thanks, I’ll give it a try!
Yeah buddy!
Thanks! If we had met only a few days earlier, I would've invited you to that show!
I got the 1 and a half step bend on hole 3 trying this, still struggling with the half and full step bend though. Still, progress is progress 😅
What was that song you played with the chromatic?
Super cool. Playin' with the Man. Tell us how you got together with JR.
Nothing crazy. We've talked a few times over the years and he was playing in my area so I reached out and we met on stage and had a long jam.
